2010 Annual Report
LOOKING BACK AT 2010... Never has it been more necessary for all of us, our friends, neighbors, and colleagues to give, advocate and volunteer. Many who have given to United Way for years are suddenly in need of help themselves. Our community is surrounded by volunteers, donors, and partners who are invested in advancing the common good in Southwest Alabama. Thank you for the tremendous role you have played by generously sharing your time, financial resources and voice. Together, we continue to change lives and build a stronger community.
In August 2010, the United Way of Southwest Alabama Board of Trustees approved The Building Blocks for a Better Community, a new community impact model dedicated to enhancing accountability and transparency, proactively targeting and addressing major human service issues facing our region, and aligning our allocation process with our stated goals for the community. We are working with our partner agencies to complete an accountability review. Once the review is completed, we will turn our attention to the allocation process, focusing on our core building blocks - Education, Essentials, Financial Stability and Health. Thanks to co-chairs Henry F. O’Connor, III and Elizabeth D. Freeman, along with the Committee members, who spent many countless hours working and developing a very comprehensive Community Impact Plan for our community.
As always, the business community of Southwest Alabama played an invaluable role in our success. Under the leadership of Campaign Chair, Joel T. Daves, IV, $4.9 million was pledged by companies and individuals. The success of the United Way campaign depends on hundreds of volunteers, including Employee Campaign Coordinators, the Campaign Cabinet, Loaned Executives, and Agency Speakers. Thanks to all for helping so enthusiastically.
